A XIX. század elején, a napóleoni háborúk idején az osztrákok egy francia ménesből több fiatal lovat zsákmányoltak, köztük egy Nonius nevű világospej, anglo-norman mént is, melyet 1816-ban Mezőhegyesre osztottak be. Ő lett Nonius Senior, a fajta ősapja.
