A Pallas Nagy Lexikona közvetlen előzménye az 1879–1885 között Somogyi Ede szerkesztésében megjelent sorozat. Az első magyar lexikon, amely már címében is lexikon, jóllehet az alcímben rögtön ismét felbukkan az enciklopédia kifejezés is. Miután Rautmann csődbe ment, Gerő Lajos 1882-ben megvette a könyvkiadó vállalatát, 1884-ben pedig megalapította a Pallas Irodalmi és Nyomdai Részvénytársaságot.
A 17 kötet egységes, korabeli, aranyozott gerincű félbőr-kötésben. 210 mm.
