Hont Ferenc 1937-ben indította el a Független Színpad mozgalmat, amely a modern, a színház társadalomalakító szerepét valló, a magyar színházi élet megreformálását célul ki­tűző szellemi irányzat képviselőiből állt. Ennek orgánuma volt a lap, amelynek alkotógárdá­já­ban olyan nevek szerepelnek, mint József Attila, Radnóti, Márai és Karinthy Frigyes. Az illusztrációk között a színpadképek mellett Háy Gyula és Buday György rajzai is megtalálhatók.
